What is Retail Data Monetization? 

Retail data monetization is the process of using your companies transaction and customer data to optimize the way you make and spend money.

There are two different ways to monetize data:

  • Direct monetization
  • Indirect monetization

Direct data monetization is when a company sells their data to another party. This can be done in many ways, such as in a package (ex. Data from 2015-2016), or as in giving access to a live feed of data as it comes in.

Indirect data monetization is where it gets more complicated. This is when a company uses their data to optimize their business strategy to be the most profitable. This could involve finding a cheaper way to do things, or using data to find among which demographic your product is the most popular and target your advertising more toward people who fall under that demographic.

Either of these processes can be applied to retail data monetization.

Retail Data Monetization: Why Should You Do It?

There are two main ways data is monetized indirectly. The first way is using data for cost reduction by increasing productivity or reducing consumption/waste. The second way involves using the data to improve sales or strengthening the customer base. 

For example:

  • Use data to geo-target retail for specific locations
  • Traffic and density planning for agencies, such as: advertising, government, transportation, city planning, and  healthcare
  • Detecting fraud in financial institutions and credit/debit card companies

As you can see, there are many many uses for data in any business, and especially so in the retail industry. Here are the 6 major factors you and your company should evaluate:

  1. Usage Rights: Do you and your company have the legal rights to re-use and sell your client’s (B2B and consumer) data?
  2. Readiness: Does your company have the required infrastructure? (IT, Sales, Service)
  3. Privacy: Do you and your company understand the privacy regulations pertaining to this data?
  4. Value Proposition: Do you understand how to value the data accurately in order to create a fair but profitable price for both you and your consumers?
  5. Timing: Are you a first mover among your market’s competitors? Are you at least in the first 50%? 
  6. Market Share: How much of the market does your organization control?

Before a company can start monetizing their data, they need to upgrade their foundations. This includes their strategy, design, and architecture. It will help them build their platform to begin monetization effectively. 

Data analytic companies can be externally sourced to provide help outside of existing capabilities. They may host tools or data providers that can get access to unique sets of data that may be otherwise unavailable. 

Many companies struggle to monetize their data to its fullest extent, only about 1 in 12 companies do it correctly. Ad hoc Analysis vs Canned Reports: Which One Should You Use?

If you’re a regular user of any type of data dashboard or analytics system, you’ve likely encountered a serious question about how to produce reports. Do you go with a canned report, or should you create ad-hoc analysis? Both approaches have their virtues, and your circumstances will often dictate which one you use. Let’s take a closer look at the question itself and the available options to make sure you make the right decision the next time the choice comes up.

This is, after all, one of the joys of living in the age of Big Data. The learning curve, however, can be a challenge. If you’re dealing with team members who often resist taking initiative or who don’t pick up tech stuff easily, this can create a barrier. Sometimes, giving them a way to can their reports is just the most painless solution.

Why BI Projects Tend to Have a High Failure Rate – Ensuring Project Success

BI projects can begin with a simple goal, but can easily go astray. BI work often involves multiple moving parts and actors. These projects can become complex, containing many dependent pieces. Critical decisions made at the wrong level can lead the plan to chaos. Additionally, timelines are sometimes aggressive and don’t fully account for delays. There are many ways that the project can fail, resulting in money wasted, below we will discuss the top three reasons why they tend to fail. Knowing these failure points is a major step toward ensuring BI project success.

Lack of Communication Between IT and Management Risks Your Project’s Success

Miscommunication can often jeopardize project success. It stems from failure to comply with ambiguous requirements involving a project. Thus, abject business outcomes can occur creating a lack of trust in the workplace.

Some examples of miscommunication are…

  • The target isn’t made apparent
  • Insights from the data aren’t clearly stated
  • The users’ wants and expectations aren’t known.

The blame usually falls upon the IT team because of their inability to communicate. Under 10% of IT leaders believe that they effectively communicate with non-IT colleagues.

Time to Value of BI Projects Are Unsatisfactory

BI project failure rate is upwards to 80% according to Gartner. Unclear business targets leave analysts with questions like…

  • What do I present to my audience?
  • Are we using the most desirable data?
  • What data should I cultivate for this project?

Along with answering those propositions, data quality issues can emerge. Dirty data can cause BI teams to become stagnant, due to the amount of data prep necessary. Increases in time-to-value occur because of the lack of alignment between business goals and the data. Checkpoints of project progression on what needs to be accomplished should happen quarterly. When implementing or a scaling a solution it can be a long process that causes users to grow impatient. This is caused by the inability to quickly learn and adapt new BI tools or the lack of qualified personnel. Once a product/update is on the market, the cost to benefit analysis comes in. Most BI projects take a while to see the intended profits, this can lead to discouragement.

If requirements weren’t formally stated, the final product can become a big flop. All the time spent on the project won’t have much value.

Data Issues

Some questions to keep in mind when working on BI projects are:

  • Where does the data come from?
  • What is the validity?
  • Do the data sets make logical sense to analyze?

The data needs to be sanitized/filtered, in order to achieve business objectives. Companies collect mass amounts of data and have numerous ways to analyze it. Focusing on the target allows this process to become simplified. Without a fixation on the target goal, “data paralysis” can occur and the objective could be lost. Data paralysis is defined as, “over analyzing a situation to where no decisions are made, causing any forward movement to halt.”

Finding a way to harness specific data that is relevant to the business need; insights can be drawn. Key points are highlighted and then presented through data visualization. There should be a focus on audience and what they need to know when presenting your insights.

Although there are many ways for a BI project to be unsuccessful; lack of communication, time to value issues, and data issues are the top causes. A way to solve these problems is to hire a project manager that has a background in BI. That individual will be able to communicate with the IT department and executives to create an attainable goal between both parties. The project manager can adjust the timeline allowing the IT department to have adequate time to complete the project and reap the rewards. 

Assuring effective communication will allow setting quality expectations and goals to become easier.  Avoiding data quality issues and slowdowns will sidestep schedule delays. The timeline for the BI project should be flexible, issues are bound to happen. It is more likely for human error to arise than technology error, so correcting your team’s actions will save project time and money.

If your operation doesn’t already have a large data infrastructure and a data-centric culture, you’ll need to put that in place. This entails:

  • Developing a business case for the strategy
  • Establishing processes and a compliance structure
  • Hiring professionals who can handle data
  • Building up servers and networks for storage and processing
  • Refining processes
  • Maintaining the strategy long-term

In many instances, the strategy you choose will guide the decision-making process. For example, a company that’s building a model for selling anonymized customer data to third parties will need to build its processes around privacy and consent concerns. A solution will need to be in place for customers to deny the use of their information, and an audit system will need to be designed to ensure privacy concerns are addressed.

Data monetization is a huge opportunity, especially for organizations that are already accumulating loads of information. What is Ad-hoc Reporting?

If you heard someone using the term “ad hoc reporting” for the first time, you might think they’re using another language, or are at least missing a few letters.  Well, that’s partly true.

Ad-hoc is Latin for “as the occasion requires.”  When you see “ad-hoc,” think “on-the-fly”. Ad-hoc reporting is a model of business intelligence (BI) in which reports are created and shared on-the-fly, usually by nontechnical business intelligence users. These reports are often done with a single specific purpose in mind, such as to provide data for an upcoming meeting, or to answer a specific question.

Under the ad-hoc model, users can use their reporting and analysis solution to answer their business questions “as the occasion requires,” without having to request help from a technology specialist. A key feature of ad-hoc reporting is that it enables, and embodies, self-service BI in most enterprises. Lets face it, most data you’ll encounter is going to be dirty. Dirty data yields inaccurate results, and is worthless for analysis until it’s cleaned up. Data cleaning is the process of preparing data for analysis by removing or modifying data that is incorrect, incomplete, irrelevant, duplicated, or improperly formatted. There are several methods for data cleansing depending on how it is stored along with the answers being sought.

Data cleansing is not simply about erasing information to make space for new data, but rather finding a way to maximize a data set’s accuracy without necessarily deleting information.

Data cleansing is the process of spotting and correcting inaccurate data. Organizations rely on data for many things, but few actively address data quality. Whether it’s the integrity of customer addresses or ensuring invoice accuracy. Ensuring effective and reliable use of data can increase the intrinsic value of the brand.  Business enterprises must assign importance to data quality.

Since there are many different types of data quality issues, each one requires different tactics to clean them.  

For one, data cleansing includes more actions than removing data, such as fixing spelling and syntax errors, standardizing data sets, and correcting mistakes such as missing codes, empty fields, and identifying duplicate records. Data cleaning is considered a foundational element of data science basics, as it plays an important role in the analytical process and uncovering reliable answers.

Most importantly, the goal of data cleansing is to create datasets that are standardized and uniform to allow business intelligence and data analytics tools to easily access and find the right data for each query.

Why Clean Data?

Improving data quality through data cleaning can eliminate problems like expensive processing errors, manual troubleshooting, and incorrect invoices. Data quality is also a way of life because important data like customer information is always changing and evolving.

Business enterprises can achieve a wide range of benefits by cleansing data and managing quality which can lead to lowering operational costs and maximizing profits.

How To Clean Data

To be considered high-quality, data needs to pass a set of quality criteria. Those include:

  • Valid: The degree to which the measures conform to defined business rules or constraints. When modern database technology is used to design data-capture systems, validity is fairly easy to ensure: invalid data arises mainly in legacy contexts (where constraints were not implemented in software) or where inappropriate data-capture technology was used (e.g., spreadsheets, where it is very hard to limit what a user chooses to enter into a cell, if cell validation is not used). Data constraints fall into the following categories.
    • Data-Type Constraints – e.g., values in a particular column must be of a particular datatype, e.g., Boolean, numeric (integer or real), date, etc.
    • Range Constraints: typically, numbers or dates should fall within a certain range. That is, they have minimum and/or maximum permissible values.
    • Mandatory Constraints: Certain columns cannot be empty.
    • Unique Constraints: A field, or a combination of fields, must be unique across a dataset. For example, no two persons can have the same social security number.
    • Set-Membership constraints: The values for a column come from a set of discrete values or codes. For example, a person’s gender may be Female, Male or Unknown (not recorded).
    • Foreign-key constraints: This is the more general case of set membership. The set of values in a column is defined in a column of another table that contains unique values. For example, in a US taxpayer database, the “state” column is required to belong to one of the US’s defined states or territories: the set of permissible states/territories is recorded in a separate States table. The term foreign key is borrowed from relational database terminology.
    • Regular expression patterns: Occasionally, text fields will have to be validated this way. For example, phone numbers may be required to have the pattern (999) 999-9999.
    • Cross-field validation: Certain conditions that utilize multiple fields must hold. For example, in laboratory medicine, the sum of the components of the differential white blood cell count must be equal to 100 (since they are all percentages). In a hospital database, a patient’s date of discharge from hospital cannot be earlier than the date of admission.
    • Data cleaning to correct validity issues can often be done programmatically.
  • Accuracy: Quite simply, is the data right. The conformity of a measure to a standard or a true value. Accuracy is very hard to achieve through data cleaning in the general case, because it requires accessing an external source of data that contains the true value: such “gold standard” data is often unavailable. Accuracy has been achieved in some data cleansing contexts, notably customer contact data, by using external databases that match up zip codes to geographical locations (city and state), and also help verify that street addresses within these zip codes actually exist.
  • Completeness: The degree to which all required measures are known. Incompleteness is almost impossible to fix with data cleaning methodology: one cannot infer facts that were not captured when the data in question was initially recorded. In the case of systems that insist certain columns should not be empty, one may work around the problem by designating a value that indicates “unknown” or “missing”, but supplying of default values does not imply that the data has been made complete.
  • Consistency: The degree to which a set of measures are equivalent in across systems. Inconsistency occurs when two data items in the data set contradict each other: e.g., a customer is recorded in two different systems as having two different current addresses, and only one of them can be correct. Fixing inconsistency is not always possible: it requires a variety of strategies – e.g., deciding which data were recorded more recently, which data source is likely to be most reliable (the latter knowledge may be specific to a given organization), or simply trying to find the truth by testing both data items (e.g., calling up the customer).
  • Uniformity: The degree to which a set data measures are specified using the same units of measure in all systems. It is often quite easy to ensure this through data cleaning early in the process, but as the process moves along, and data is transformed and changed, it becomes far more difficult. In datasets pooled from different locales, weight may be recorded either in pounds or kilos, and must be converted to a single measure using an arithmetic transformation. This also points out the problem of naked metrics, where values like weight may be recorded as an integer value. Unless there is another column directly next to it, or a notation in the column heading, it can be next to impossible to determine whether a value is in kilos or pounds, or celsius or Fahrenheit.

The term integrity encompasses accuracy, consistency and some aspects of validation but is rarely used by itself in data-cleansing contexts because it is insufficiently specific.

How Can I Use Data Cleaning?

Regardless of the type of analysis or data visualizations you need, data cleansing is a vital step to ensure that the answers you generate are accurate. When collecting data from several streams and with manual input from users, information can carry mistakes, be incorrectly inputted, or have gaps.

Data cleaning helps ensure that information always matches the correct fields while making it easier for business intelligence tools to interact with data sets to find information more efficiently. One of the most common data cleaning examples is its application in data warehouses.

After cleansing, a data set should be consistent with other similar data sets in the system. The inconsistencies detected or removed may have been originally caused by user entry errors, by corruption in transmission or storage, or by different data dictionary definitions of similar entities in different stores. Data cleaning differs from data validation in that validation almost invariably means data is rejected from the system at entry and is performed at the time of entry, rather than on batches of data

A successful data warehouse stores a variety of data from disparate sources and optimizes it for analysis before any modeling is done. To do so, warehouse applications must parse through millions of incoming data points to make sure they’re accurate before they can be slotted into the right database, table, or other structure.

Organizations that collect data directly from consumers filling in surveys, questionnaires, and forms also use data cleaning extensively. In their cases, this includes checking that data was entered in the correct field, that it doesn’t feature invalid characters, and that there are no gaps in the information provided.
